Ask Di: Fair-Weather Friends?

Dear Di,

I find that some “friends” in SL run hot and cold.  One week they want to hang out all the time, have fun, and be social.  Then they stop replying to messages even when they are in-world…for weeks sometimes. They fail to show up as promised and “hide” when they are online.

Men seem to do this more, but not exclusively.  RL friends would never do that.  How should we treat these sorts of “friends”?

Yours,

Grumbler

Dear Grumbler –

I feel your pain. After 1 year in SL, Dianna is getting more and more blunt as she gets older so here’s what I do…UNFRIEND THEM. Take them off your list. Sounds harsh, but they will then either get the message that you don’t want to be ignored and that they’ve been a crappy friend, or you’ll never hear from them again.

You don’t have to be on someone’s friend list for them to be able to find you. I have found that after I have unfriended some people who ignored me, that they looked me up and said “sorry” and we became friends again. But true to SL form, friendships come & go much faster than in RL, so you’ll have to accept that friends today may not be friends tomorrow. I say if someone can’t be bothered to even say “hi” when they are online why do I think they are my friend? You might be nicer than me and give them another chance, but after weeks…I say move on…too many fish in that SL sea baby!

XXOO
Di
