Dear Di,

Give me some basic guidance on gift-giving in SL.  What sorts of gifts are appropriate for friends?  What are not?

Yours,

Spendthrift

Dear Spendthrift-

In this case I am going to ask you to draw from RL experience. If you know the person well and know their SL tastes, buy them something they like - clothes, shoes, etc…sizes ALWAYS fit in SL. Remember tho that unlike RL, things are generally NOT returnable in SL. So if you are unsure of what they would like, get them a Gift Certificate - yes you can find them in SL at most stores, or you can contact the store owner and they can usually arrange something for you - they want your business just like in RL.

Now this is for the guys…DO NOT - I repeat DO NOT buy a woman something STUPID like furniture, weapons/toys or appliances even in SL unless you KNOW she wants that item. Since in SL there is no perfume or candy something sparkly is always nice, and even if it’s not her style you get brownie points for jewelry! Flowers are good too and they NEVER die, but if she does not have a “home” to display them in they will just sit in her inventory. You can’t go wrong with the GC… and you know you can always ask what they would like. I’d rather know exactly what I was getting and know I wanted it than have something sitting in my inventory I’ll never use. Good luck!

XXOO
Di
