Location: Many stores, in search of a leather jacket
In real life, I’m teased about how much I enjoy dressing up. In my wardrobe, one of my favorites is a black leather jacket, and I had to have one in SL. Of course, in SL as in real life, quality varies, but in a virtual world, quality for a leather jacket is not always directly related to price.
Tracy Edelman is a better shopper than I am, and Dianna Defiant is the queen of the shopping universe, but neither were online when I went to the stores. So I went out on my own. . .
I found two leather jackets like my real one, but one of them was flat, without even the simulated look of leather, while the other was a biker’s dream, straight out of Marlon Brando’s The Wild One. Both jackets cost 200 Lindens (less than one real buck). Unlike the avatar “skins” I tested a while back, however, there was no way to try on the jackets before purchasing them!
My economics lesson, then, is one we all know on this side of the screen: let the buyer beware. I used the SL search tools to visit several shops, after putting “leather” in the search field. Still, doing that can lead to interesting results and things other than jackets for sale. In SL, let the teleporting avatar beware too!
Linden Lab promises to enhance the search tools. I hope so. Meanwhile, I’m going to sport my jacket and look for the right baseball cap (black, of course) or Aussie drover’s hat (black, of course).
In the future, will we save precious fossil fuels and time by trying different products in SL first, before driving or surfing to a merchant? I hope so. . . my shopping trip, start to finish, took 30 minutes.
