Dear Di,

I keep meeting avatars, many of them not newcomers to SL, who have the impression that they can “get rich” there. I know it’s possible to make a decent living in-world, but it’s also enormously hard work and only a few people get wealthy from their avatars.  Many of the naive folks I meet are very nice, and I don’t want to hurt them. What’s a good approach to popping that particular bubble?

Mr. Bad News

Dear Mr. Bad News:

So who says YOU have to be the one to “pop that bubble?“ I say let them live & learn. I have been in SL a long time and have seen lots of thing. One thing I have never seen (personally) is anyone who actually made $. Most people think of SL as their “hobby” and they pay into the game because they like it and it’s fun to them. You never know - they may be the next “millionaire SL-er.“ SL tends to mirror RL more than we think – probably because we are all actually real people. So just like in RL business, if someone wants to put in the effort and thinks they can make a go at a SL business -I say more power to them. If they fail, then it’s way easier to go out of virtual business than RL business. And it’s easier to start up the next venture too smile. “Getting rich” in SL - not probable…having a business and having fun at it if you want to work a little - totally possible. Next person you meet who says they are getting rich on SL - tell them GOOD LUCK!

Then change the subject… smile
