Furries, the Tricksters of SL?, Part 2

A thought that came to me this morning during my subway ride to work was, that in the Native American mythology a very famous topic is the trickster. The trickster is a character that constantly tries to deceive innocent and unsuspecting people into foolish things and quite often succeeds in doing so. The trickster is very often depicted as a raven or a fox and since the fox is by far the most popular furry form in SL the (apart from the nekos) the thought wasn´t to much overstretched. Some nice stories about tricksters can be found in Leslie Marmon Silko´s “Storyteller” or “Almanach of the Dead”. Native American storytelling can be a quite challenging read since it differs from the classical approach and be quite violent at times.

But why did the connection of the trickster and furries and SL spring to my mind? In fact it was the quote from the beginning which gave me the idea since in the last time the opening of a virtual Cologne Cathedral caused some uproar in the furry community. The creators of the cathedral wanted to avoid conflicts with the church and imposed the RL rules for access upon the sim. Since masks are not allowed in the cathedral they augmented that no furries are allowed either since a furry is wearing a kind of mask. The results were some angry protests where Furries turned up with weapons fueling the debate even more (full coverage on these events can be found in issue 38 of the Avastar).

This incident reminded me of a fact that I noticed earlier when browsing the SL-exchange catalogue. Quite often furries are used to sell weapons (sniper and assault rifles for example) or uniforms (ranging from regular soldiers to weapons SS uniforms ... including insignia) and related military gear.
So are furries so cute that you simply have to believe them in everything? I don’t think so. Like any other avatar they are representations of people like you and me. I think its a very sad fact that some people actually have to “nice up” dubious content by using furry avatars.

Postscript by MarcusboobooAurelius Enoch: Auntie Tenchi, yu knows I woodn’t never, ever play no tricks on yu…if’n yu was watchin’ anysohow.  My paw dun taught this-hear lil’ fox rite good on that point.

I agree with you and Tenchi. If a person (or a society) loses the ability to laugh that is a very dangerous sign. Especially the ability to laugh about yourself!

By the way, I have only been annoyed by a furry once in my 8 months in SL (strangely enough - a fox). Compared by the many times I have been annoyed by “human” avatars, I’d always prefer the company of a furry…

And the debate on the Cologne Cathedral is just plain silly. I understand that religious feelings have to be protected, but shouldn’t religion also communicate love, equality and tolerance?
Second Life is not Real Life and the owners of that SIM should try to accept that.

P.S. Why do feel the urge to make a prank phone call or “decorate” your SL houses? wink

Well I don“t think that their reputation in general is bad. Its just the same like it always is .... some cause the evil for all of them.

yes. Pappy is one hell of a trickster but I like being tricked by him since he is so unique in his ways ..... big respect.

and even bigger respect to you Iggy. your last paragraph sums it perfectly up what sl should be about.

Furries have a “bad rep,“ but Tenchi’s column helps me understand non-furry Pappy Enoch a lot better.

His entire purpose in SL is to play tricks and tell stories about tricks played or planned.

SL is too serious some times—-we need more pranksters who are not malicious “griefers.“ Any culture that cannot tolerate a good joke (or even tasteless but harmless ones) is in real trouble…
