I’m still a bit giddy about mentoring new residents. Di and I have not been mentoring together since our first day, so I hope she is enjoying the process as much as I have.
I had anticipated some of the issues: avatars who could not even walk properly, for instance. A new resident and I just helped a poor woman who was stuck in a corner, walking into a wall repeatedly and near tears about it. We literally had to push her avatar into the open again so she could walk! Less than a year ago, that was me! I left her fellow newcomer to help and went on to answer other cries for help.
Mentoring observations so far:
—Most new residents are patient and thankful. A few are impatient and angry.
—Many ask me “what’s the point?” but reply favorably when I ask them “what do you want to do here?”
—Only one resident has asked “where’s the sex?” My reply: “Um, not here. Open search, enter ‘sex’ when you get off the island. Have fun.” More residents are thankful when I tell them how to be careful around griefers and other rogues.
—At least two avatars had found love, if not lust, on Orientation Island. They had already “married” in Second Life. They were both French…living up to their reputation as born romantics.
—The “Newbie Suitcase” is greatly appreciated by newcomers. I will keep adding more items to the men’s and women’s suitcase as I have time. Keep sending them to me!
My participation in Stability Now! Shows me that we avatars have the power to make new residents’ experiences as positive as possible. We can lobby the company to make it more stable, but having committed, rather than casual, residents will also make a populace that will stand up for their rights. What SL does not need is mere zombies, stumbling through a virtual place in search of the next thrill.
I’ve not met many of them, yet.
